The Big Move. Flying Solo.

Beginning my career as a School Psychologist.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will never forget the feeling I had walking off that plane last year. It was a Thursday in late July, 2009 and I was terrified, excited, and well...lost (in more ways than one). I didn't know one person in Hawaii, only friends of friends.

I got off the plane with two large suitcases. That's it. No one was there to pick me up or greet me...  I didn't know where I was going to live and was relying entirely on a craigslist.org housing ad for shelter...

Honolulu School District introduced me to the "Spirit of Aloha" when they sent Lynette, Honolulu's head School Psychologist. She met me at the airport, helped me with my car rental (my first time EVER renting a car), and then I followed her to the address I had found online (craigslist) to a room I was potentially going to move into.  I was astounded..where else you would find a co-worker who would drive across town to check out your living arrangements and make sure you find your way around.

My adventures in Hawaii have been more than I could have ever imagined. It's hard to recapture those moments before I moved...I was terrified but so excited. I still can't believe that I managed to fly over without knowing a single person, or where I was going to live, or what the job was going to look like but I did it.   My personal journey as a school psychologist is rooted in my experience as a educational assistant, and as a teacher for children who have  special needs. Most of my time in the classroom was at the secondary level (7-12...and of course our 13th graders aka "super seniors").

While I continue this exploration of my field and in this state, I hope to share my experiences with those who are interested.
